Study Real Alcoholics To'be sui-e they were studying real -alcoholics, they took- 19 in- mates of the Knox County (Ten- nessee) Workhouse. All were serving sentences 'for public drunkenness and each had been arrested at least'-five'times be- fore for-other offenses. These 19 common street drunks Ihey "matched" with 19 men who had unblemished reputations for sobriety, the matches were made by -age, education, I. and vo- cational skills (or lack of them.) All 38 men had the common en- vironmental background -of Knox-. viile and environs.
Psychological' investigators of the University of Tennessee, where Pascal 'and Jenkins are members of the. faculty, went to work on them. All 38. were "scored" by what they got from their parents the way -of lov- ing loving interest recognize. Regular Church Attendance "When- time came to make these scores, Pas- cal and Jenkins were.able'to pick out the the alcoholics on the basis of scores alone-since they had ho idea of which score belonged to.which.man.
Both parents of each alcoholic scored low, comparatively, in ac- tive play with their son, in dis- plays oE affection, in restraints, in doing what, other parents did.
