Yesterday I went to look at 1994 Miata R that is for sale in my area. It has been very well maintained, garaged, and it has never seen a winter. It is a southern car so it has no rust. There are a few bumps and scrapes, but nothing out of the ordinary for a 111,000 mile car.
Here is the listing: http://peoria.craigslist.org/cto/5561664822.html
The seller is looking for $6000. Is this a reasonable asking price?

I'd offer 5,500; but if I wanted, I wouldn't walk away @ full price.

Missing the R wheels (2 lbs lighter per wheel), hopefully not the front spoiler too. Could be a point of negotiation.

Check it out and buy it.

The front spoiler is $50 brand new on eBay. So u plan to negotiate like $15 for the old scraped up one? Pleeez!

Fair asking price. If you get it weigh the wheels to be sure they are light.

Ask if he has the R wheels.

Are those the NB 'Sport' 15" wheels? If so, they come in at 13 lbs a corner. The factory wheels (14") were 10.8 lbs. Not a huge difference, especially given the size difference.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone!
The wheels are one of the very few things that are no longer stock, everything else is there. I believe they are they 15" NB sport wheels, but they do have a little rashing and are missing the centercaps.

The wheels are the negotiation ammunition, not the spoiler. Pleeez.

You should be able to find a set of wheels for between $250 and $300. So don't let it get away. i have a set and I'm not too far away from you.

FYI, if you are looking specifically for an R, another went up in Denver about 30 minutes ago. Red w/ 102k. asking price is a bit high for my taste but looks clean and mostly original.

The wheels are only 'valuable' if you are someone who wants everything to look stock.
I personally find the rims on this car quite stylish.

White R pkg are scarce in our parts. Looks really nice. NB 15" wheels look good too & better for handling.
Have you checked for the oem Bilstein shocks? Manual steering? Manual window cranks?
If you get the VIN, you can call Mazda Customer Service at 1.800.222.5500 to confirm it is an R pkg.
Personally, I think it looks great.

For comparison purposes, there was a low milage 1994 R on BaT recently. It sold for $8-9K. It had many owners, spent most of it's life in Massachusetts, was sold by a GA/FLA seller to a buyer in NOLA.
A lot of people thought it should have sold for more, the consensus seems to be that the multiple owners, lack of a/c and lack of undercarriage pictures kept the price low.

One mans "stylish" is another mans "fugly". They look like the wheels which were on my STO. Definately 'fugly" and gone. The Bronze 6 UL's on there now are stylish.

Is there a way to decode the VIN on the Mazda website? I tried calling twice today but the hold time is very long.

www.mymazda.com was the site I used to use to plug in a VIN & get the pkg but it seems to not be working right now.

And also 2 lbs per corner heavier.
It comes down to personal preference. For instance, some people like '92-'95 Dodge Vipers, I happen to think they look grotesque.

Never mind, I found the online chat on their site.

Ask this guy if it came from Springfield Illinois a "southern car" ?
This sounds like a car that sold out of that area about 7-9 months ago that I missed. Sure looks like it.
Had body damage in numerous area's, some items were missing also.
I think that I archived it,
Have you done as recommended here, serial number ?????????????
Please post it for future use for other M net people,
Thanks in advance

This is a North Carolina car. The seller brought it to Illinois in 2011 (confirmed by the Carfax).
I also checked with Mazda to confirm that it came from the factory with the R Package, and they were able to confirm that it is authentic.
I'll post more when it is mine :)

I think you need to keep things in perspective. If your racing and trying to save every 100th of a second... sure. If your getting a Miata for a nice street car would you really notice 2 lbs. a corner extra?

research "unsprung weight".

Oh lots of us have. My 15X7 Advanti Storms S1 are 10 lbs each, and the tire selection for '15 rims is FAR superior.

A little unsprung weight does not trump sticky 225's on a 9" rim.

when I took the stock BBS wheels off my M, and replaced them with 15x8's with 225's on them, I definitely noticed the car felt slower.
OP, did you buy it?

Its all in your head. Your butt dyno needs to be re-calibrated. You are driving a slooooooow car to begin with. If it felt slower after adding a few pounds I think you may have an engine problem. Can it even get out of its own way if heavens for bid you have to take a passenger? Suggested by someone else above... go pinch a loaf. You crack me up.
Oh and by the way 225's belong on 9's. 205's on an 8. That's for autocrossing to prevent sidewall flex.

Yes! I purchased it on Tuesday, but I wasn't able to bring it home until today.
On the way back, I put the top down and took a twisty(ish) backroad home. I get what the hype is all about. I am really looking forward to taking the car out and getting to know it better!
If the weather cooperates, I'll take some pictures this weekend and post them.
Cheers!
